Mini Challenge Round 6 28th Feb-1st March 09 Manfield

MINI CHALLENGE SERIES BACK IN THE NORTH ISLAND.

With only two rounds remaining, the MINI Challenge Series is back in the North Island, at the Manfeild Park racing circuit, Feilding.

Going into the penultimate Round 6 at Manfeild this weekend the Top 5 is:

  • 1st        Craig Innes (Taupo)                    892
  • 2nd       Simon McLennan (Wellington)       871
  • 3rd        Gavin Yortt (Hawkes Bay)             746
  • 4th        Mark Maddren (Auckland)            670
  • 5th        Gary Johnstone (Christchurch)      512

Manfeild is a driver's circuit, a minimum 12 metre track width with up to 9 passing opportunities. The MINI's are good for 210 kph at Manfeild and with the big mix of left and right hand cambered corners cars they will be freight training with virtually nothing between them.  In fact at Ruapuna, seven cars crossed the line with just under 3 seconds covering them after 12 laps - plus 20 minutes of racing.  Add to that MINI's don't have limited slip differentials so the drivers must be smooth through the corners to avoid wheel spin.

MINI Challenge Co-ordinator Martin Collins said:

"5th placed Gary Johnstone is not coming up to Manfeild but three North Island drivers are re-joining the series. James Kirkpatrick (Auckland), Martin Hunt (Wellington) and David Grigor (Auckland).

The good news for Joel Thrupp is, he is no longer labelled the 'Rookie', as there will be three new entries at Manfeild.

Chris Parkinson has purchased the ex Richard Moore car which has been rebuilt after its dramatic roll at Ruapuna last year.

Napier driver Dean McMillan has put a deal together to lease a MINI to compete in the final two rounds. Dean has been in semi retirement since last competing in the 2006/07 NZV8 Development series in which he finished 2nd overall.

The third new entry is Ryan Bailey from Palmerston North."

To keep the racing close at the top, the first three place getters in each race get 'rewarded' with weight penalties that are accumulated and they have to carry at the next race meeting.  If they finish worse than 3rd in a race at the next meeting, for whatever reason, they get a weight credit - weight is taken out.

These weight boxes are tamper proof and bolted to the floor on the empty passenger side.  As the season progressed it got interesting in the points battle as you find several of the front runners carrying the maximum 50kg.  So that the public know what is going on, the ballast kilos carried, is shown on the car's side window.

Race Commentator Mike Eady, who is also a BMW / MINI Driver Instructor, said:  "The reward system of weight ballast really works and helps to produce such close racing. In the two seasons to date MINI Challenge has provided some of the most exciting racing and the television coverage rated very high - pleasing for the sponsors of the individual cars and drivers."

QUALIFYING AND RACE ONE FROM MANFEILD.

Round 6 of 7 and the two practice sessions on the Friday were held in warm and humid conditions but all the teams were more concerned with what was in store for them on Saturday - a heavy rain forecast.

The three new rookies were quickly into it with Ryan Bailey surprising all when he came in 4th in Session 1 and then 3rd in Session 2.

Ryan Bailey has leased Tony Houston's car for the last two rounds. Originally from Palmerston North but now residing in Auckland, the 20-year-old works for driver training specialist Mike Eady who owns Tracktime. He has won two New Zealand and two North Island championship titles in karts, first made the move to cars three years ago, coming close to winning the Star Car series in his debut year.  Bailey's idea of 'spreading the load' has see him successfully solicit support from 11 different companies; European Auto Spares, Wedding Bridle, Dittmer Panel Beaters, Obertech Group, Nissan Car Parts Palmerston North, Capture NZ, Advanced Personnel Services , Colin Waite Panelbeaters, Logic Computer Solutions, G.J. Gardiner Homes and Pridex Kitchens.

Chris Parkinson has purchased the ex Richard Moore car which has had an excellent rebuild after its multi-roll at Ruapuna last year.  Parkinson has been racing Mini 7's since 1973.  His 'claim to fame' is not that he was one of the four Founders of Radio Hauraki back in 1966 but that he is older than Kenny Smith and like Kenny, he too has heart bi-pass surgery. Parkinson's cream MINI is devoid of any sponsor decals other than the Series sponsors.

Dean McMillan hails from Greenmeadows (Napier) and has purchased the ex Shaun Turton car.  He can't really be called a rookie as he has come out of semi retirement since last competing in the 2006/07 NZV8 Development series - in which he finished 2nd overall. He used the two practice sessions to come to grips with car and said he was astounded how much grip they had.  McMilllan is sponsored by his own motor vehicle dealership, Evolution Motors, in Greenmeadows.

Practice Session 2 at 12:30pm

Come Saturday morning, suffice to say we all awoke to steady rain.

IMG_7843

This is the scene in the pits - wet and dismal.

David Grigor said "This is only the third time in three seasons that we have put wets on.   First season none, last year at Pukekohe, at Ruapuna it rained but our race was cancelled after chaos in the NZV8's race.  Teretonga on the Saturday and the last time was practice at Taupo."

So confident in the forecast that the rain was coming all cars were on wets already.  It rained continuously and the Production drivers were quick to find out how wet the track was with cars spinning off the track and being caught in the 'litter'.

MINI's turn was 10am and Craig Innes was quickly at the top of the leader board.  As the laps settled in he was a second quicker than Simon McLennan.  Ryan Bailey was not far off their pace and neither was Gavin Yortt and Martin Hunt.

Dean McMillan had a big moment spinning on the infield and the gravel trap just saved from the wall.   A lap later Mark Maddren did two complete 360's spins and fortunately avoided the walls completely.

Last lap and Bailey pulls off a very fast one and moves into 2nd only 0.438 behind Innes but 0.311 in front of Simon McLennan.  Come racing, no doubt Bailey will be acutely aware that Craig Innes, on 892 points and Simon McLennan on 871 are racing for the Championship !

Qualifying times.

As the cars returned to their pits they were all weighed and had their track width measured.  Ride height was also checked and fuel samples taken.

RACE 1

Racing was set down for 2:45pm and the rain had stopped for at least one hour but the track was still very wet.   It was a good clean start. Innes lead out from Bailey and McLennan but behind them they were three abreast going into Turn 1.

IMG_7875

Craig Innes leads from Ryan Bailey on the outside and Simon McLennan in behind Innes in the dark red car. Chris Parkinson is missing from this image. Fortunately he was on the back row, for he was in reverse !

Yortt moved into 4th and a lap later was getting closer to McLennan.  The front four moved out but the next four were having their own race.

Parkinson had a moment at the end of the front straight when he went straight ahead but was able to drive out of the gravel.  A lap later he went in much faster and buried the wheels and was there until the finish.

McLennan had dropped back but Bailey was very close to Innes.

IMG_7895

Craig Innes being hounded by Ryan Bailey.

As they went through the esses and turned left Innes hesitated and Bailey 'tapped' him.  Innes obviously had missed a gear and Bailey went onto win by 1.3 seconds. It was 4 seconds back to McLennan and 0.8 to Yortt.

Race 1

After the race Bailey said "I wasn't going to pass Craig (Innes) but was just being cheeky showing my nose on the inside.  Then he hesitated and I unfortunately tapped him. I did not mean to and when he hesitated again I just went inside him."

Innes said "As I went to change up I had a gearbox full of neutrals and when he tapped me I missed 2nd again and it was enough for him to go past me."

Chris Parkinson's explanation "I had a problem and think I have an ABS issue."

A very, very good drive from Ryan Bailey and Craig Innes slightly extends his lead over Simon McLennan. Somebody who has not had a mention is Joel Thrupp who finished 7th but had the 4th fastest time.

QUALIFYING

WHAT WAS THE WEATHER DOING FOR DAY TWO AT MANFEILD ?

Lots of rain overnight with plenty of surface water.  The grassed areas were very boggy.  There was much sky gazing and indecision as to whether to remain on wet weather tyres or move to slicks.  Slicks it was, as the Production cars had left distinct dry lines.

At both race days David Taylor and his team from Motorsport Services generously put on a cooked breakfast and lunch for all the MINI Challenge teams. A gesture that was appreciated by all.

Threatening showers were still around so Dean McMillan took a gamble and went for wets.  Once on the grid the rain cloud magically disappeared and the sun was attempting to break through.

RACE 2.

Ryan Bailey was on the front row outside of Championship leader Craig Innes.  Bailey was holding high revs and started to creep so he lifted off just as the lights went green.  Innes had the better drive off the line as did Simon McLennan who was behind Innes and quickly into 2nd.

Joel Thrupp who was 4th on the grid because of his 4th fastest lap yesterday was also through into 3rd. Bailey found himself a distant 4th. Thrupp was all over Innes and McLennan joined them into Turn 1.

IMG_7933

There was chaos behind them.  #76 at left is David Grigor, #69 Marty Hunt, #25 James Kirkpatrick and #16 Dean McMillan. This was with a 400mm lens.

Hunt and Grigor got going again.  Kirkpatrick parked it up immediately.  A lap later McMillan parks up also and Parkinson is back in the gravel but this time at Higgins.

IMG_7935

Innes leads them into 'splash' corner and the esses. Next is McLennan, Bailey, Thrupp (obscured) and Yortt. The tyre marks in the grass was where one of the Suzukis had rolled in the previous Production Class race.

Couple of laps later and Thrupp was past McLennan in the middle esses but as the three entered the front straight McLennan went right around the outside reclaiming 2nd.  Bailey was about three car lengths behind them.

Two more corners and Thrupp was back to 2nd and now all front four were close.

IMG_7947

Thrupp takes Innes on the inside and McLennan is not far behind.

As they went into Toyota bend at the end of the front straight McLennan is sideways with Thrupp the only one near him.  Bailey is through and once it settles Innes has at least ten car lengths on them.

Meantime Gavin Yortt, Mark Maddren, David Grigor and Marty Hunt were having a race of their own.

The top four settled down to at least four car lengths between them.  I had said in the preview that they would be 'freight training' but with some nine opportunities to pass the separation worked better as they were all changing lines trying to out-fox each other.

IMG_7953

Innes from McLennan, Thrupp and Bailey.

That's the way it went to the line apart from Hunt and Grigor who had nothing between them as they went to the line side-by-side - Hunt got it by 0.188  It was one of the most exciting races we had seen for ages.

Back in the pits Simon McLennan said "I turned into T1 knowing that, despite limited vision, that Simon was not up to my B pillar."

The Stewards said that both were side-by-side and there was nothing in it.  Video replay clearly shows that McLennan definitely owned the line and Thrupp was at fault.

To his great credit, Thrupp came straight over to the MINI pits. His MINI was pitted quite some distance away with his Production Suzuki as the two classes were back-to-back. He said to Simon McLennan "I thought I had an opportunity on the inside and I went in a little too. It was wet off he racing line and sorry I turned you."

It was Chris Parkinson's third visit to the gravel and MINI Challenge's Technical 'man' Peter Burke, had already changed his cars ABS sensor.  There was obviously something very wrong in the wiring loom causing the failure and considering the history of the car that's a logical explanation.

The four that left the track at T1 had varying damage. Dean McMillan was on wets and had wheel-spin off the line.  He got a side-slap from James Kirkpatrick at T1 and had a steering problem and completed the lap and pulled into the pits.   Kirkpatrick also has steering damage.  Both cars had broken suspension bottom racks.  Marty Hunt was hit on the right hand side by Kirkpatrick and in turn he forced McMillan to go straight ahead through the gravel. Although he finished minus a front left flare Marty Hunt also had brake calliper damage.  In the video replay, courtesy of Marty Hunt and Brent Melsop, it was hard to attribute blame to anyone as it all happened so quickly in real time.

RACE 3.

This is 'reverse grid Top 10' and as James Kirkpatrick was the first dnf he did not make that Top 10. As it turned out Chris Parkinson joined him at the back of the grid as well.

The lights went green and David Grigor, who was on the front, had a very slow start.  Ryan Bailey has a 'blinder' and went from Row 3 (in 6th position) to 2nd.  Not much later he was into 1st.  Mark Maddren was also past Marty Hunt. Meantime Craig Innes was up to 3rd.

IMG_7966

Next thing Gavin Yortt is sideways coming into Splash which is the entry of the esses. Next thing Mark Maddren had a drive-through-penalty for turning Yortt  !

Two laps later Bailey had a 50 metre lead advantage and McLennan was right on Innes.  Innes would always go deep at the end of the esses and McLennan dived underneath him.  That slowed Innes'd drive out of the corner and next thing Grigor was past him as well.   5th to 9th were 'freight-training' each other.

A lap later and Joel Thrupp is right on Grigor.  Whilst Bailey appeared to have the legs on McLennan and Innes it had to be remembered that McLennan and Innes were both carrying 50 kgs of 'weight ballast reward'.

Towards the end Bailey, Mclennan, Innes, Grigor and Thrupp had closed up on each other especially Thrupp over Grigor.

Another lap and it's very close at the front.  Meantime Hunt, McMillan, Kirkpatrick and Yortt are racing their own race.  Next thing Thrupp is past Grigor.  The front three are now 'freigh training'.

Two laps to go and just when McLennan looks like he can have a go at Bailey, McLennan pulls off the track.

That is the way it went to the flag but on the final lap there was a big incident.  Marty Hunt was turning into the right hander leading onto the back straight (Higgins), when Yortt piles into the back of him at great speed and both cars go off.

Great run by Ryan Bailey and an excellent overall win.  Innes is 2nd and extends his Championship lead thanks to McLennan's unfortunate dnf. Joel Thrupp is 3rd - his first podium.

Simon McLennan explained his dnf, "Clutch, I had no drive at all."

Craig Innes said "My speed was hampered by handling problems caused by 'wheel rub' from others.  I lacked brakes as I over-heated them trying make up for my lack of speed."

Gavin Yortt was most apologetic to Marty Hunt for the right rear damage to Hunt's car.  He said he ran out of brakes and the video replay (courtesy of Marty Hunt) showed how big the hit was.  Yortt definitely came off second best as his frontal damage was very extensive with the engine moved back into the firewall.

Not long after they finished the skies opened up again.

The 7th and final Round is at Pukekohe in two weeks time.
